Custom Wheel Considerations And Tips
Sometimes the right accessories can make a car unique and very flashy. Custom wheels are often the easiest accessories to get and put on for the most dramatic change in the appearance of a vehicle. Rims can range in size from about 15 inches all the way up to 24 inches and come in many different finishing like polished chrome. There are literally thousands of different designs and aftermarket wheels are made for almost any vehicle in production. If you are thinking of purchasing aftermarket wheels for your vehicle, there are a few considerations first.
How large are the wheels already on your vehicle?
Every part made for a car was made the way it was for a specific reason and changing its size can affect how your car operates. For example if you currently have 15 inch stock wheels on your car, replacing them with 17″ wheels will require you to get some new tires that will fit the larger rims. Before looking at designs you must first determine what models of wheels will fit on your ride. Some cars hold a wheel in place with four lug nuts, others five and come six. While a wheel dealer will be able to tell you this before you buy, it is important to know what you can select from before getting your heart set on a particular wheel. It is also important to note that a wheel too far over the original size for your vehicle may affect things like your speedometer readings, turn radius and ground clearance. There may be some functionality lost when changing to a new part. For example a car that was manufactured with 15 inch rims that were replaced with 22 inch rims will no longer have an accurate speedometer.
You may have to buy five rims instead of four.
Many people don’t take into account all the possible factors of their car they will have to change simply by changing the wheels. Of course if you buy a custom wheel that is the same size as your original wheels, you will not have to worry. Buying a larger size however will render your spare tire ineffective. Many cars have smaller spares termed donuts in the even they get a flat tire. If all of your new wheels are 20 inches in diameter and you still have a 12 inch donut in the trunk, you will be calling a flatbed to come and get your vehicle. Buying a fifth wheel and tire will solve this issue but thinking of it before hand is the real battle.
Custom wheels or rims are one of the flashiest accessories that individuals can buy for their cars. Most models are relatively inexpensive for a flashy new look and you can get them at custom wheel shops or at tire dealers. It is important however to consider the information above before you buy to prevent future damage or loss of functionality to your auto.
